Gangster Malayalam Movie Review

Mosayila kuthirameenukal Review

Let me put it straight across. Gangster is a big disappointment that does not match any of the prerelease hype created among the movie buffs. With this script, I am not sure how Mammooty decided to be part of this venture. Also surprised with Aashiq Abu’s decision to give green signal to Ahmed Siddhique and Abhilash - the script writers of the movie. There are movies that have the style quotient as well as content in it and there are movies that has any one of the above factors but here in Gangster what we have is a no substance no style movie.

If you want to see Mammooty in a stylish avatar and his cool looks, you get them aplenty in You Tube and you need not waste your time and money on this one. Going by the response in the theatre, even die-hard fans of the actor were a disappointed lot.

The plot is presented as a narrative and revolves around Akbar Ali Khan, a gangster and a gang of three including Akbar who rules the Mangalore port. Rest of the story has the familiar revenge saga that we normally see in a gangster film.

Director could have presented the movie in a better way. The use of animation for narrating the flash back in the initial twenty minutes or so and in the climax backfired. The climax as well as the final dialogue that the hero makes is a total letdown while the introduction scene of Akbar Ali Khan was also not that impressive.

On the acting front, in these genres of movies, we don't expect a great acting from the lead actor and as expected Mammooty looked stylish throughout but with less dialogues and prominence and screen presence given more to the antagonist, fans might get disappointed. The two female leads, Aparna Gopinath and Nyla Usha does not have any major role to play here.

John Paul, Kunjan, TG Ravi and Haresh Peradi did their respective roles quite well and there are few other supporting casts too in the film all new faces.

Coming to the protagonist role played by Shekar Menon, it seems the film is made to project him in a different avatar rather than presenting a stylish film cashing in on the super cool looks of Mammookka. If not, Ikka would have had more screen presence than Shekhar who did his role in a decent manner though at times it goes over the top.

The one song composed by Deepak Dev was a good number to hear but it does not have a full version in the film. Technically the frames and cuts were fine, thanks to the camera and editing department while action choreography did not impress at all.

On the whole, Aashiq Abu disappointed the viewers as well as the fans of Mammootty for presenting this film in such a bad shape. I can't give more than 2 / 5 and even this generous score is just for the stylish looks of Mammookka.
