Gulab Gang Hindi Movie Review

REVIEW : Follow The Cinema Company

Have been getting some mixed to average comments on Gulaab Gang but that did not stop me from watching the movie and there are two reasons for that decision; one is of course each viewer has his own tastes and preferences and the second reason is the influential one here. Presence of Madhuri Dixit and Juhi Chawla, two ladies who ruled the Bollywood industry for more than a decade or so.

Now the question is whether the presence of these two heroines made any difference to Gulaab Gang, the movie scripted and directed by Soumik Sen. In terms of performance, yes the film has some fine moments to watch especially the combination scenes of Madhuri and Juhi that too where the duo appear in two powerful characters.

As a film, Gulaab Gang is a typical Bollywood movie where a hero fights against social injustice, corruption, suppression of the weak and atrocities committed against women. And the hero will have a protagonist who will be a powerful person with influence and power to fight against. The situation is no different here but the difference here is substitution of women in place of men.

The plot revolves around Gulaab Gang, a group of women clad in pink sarees who fight against social injustice in a remote village in Northern part of India. Rajjo played by Madhuri is their leader while Juhi Chawla plays Saumitra Devi, a powerful and influential politician in their area.

The movie follow the cliched pattern of narrating such stories that we have seen in the past and the difference as I said earlier is women doing the protagonist and antagonist role here.

On the positive side, the powerful dialogues along with some appreciable performances from Juhi Chawla and Madhuri Dixit are the notable ones that force us to watch the film.

Now to the acting side, Juhi as Saumitra Devi outshines Madhuri Dixit though Madhuri as Rajjo also stands out. Actually there aren't much difference between the two but still its Juhi who comes out the winner portraying the negative character with such perfection.

Cinematography was good while editing too was done neatly. Music by director himself is good in parts. The melodius number was good hearing a second time while there are few more songs that are mostly fast dance numbers that suited the situations. But the timing of couple of songs were questionable.

Overall, Gulaab Gang is an average fare. If you love to see Juhi and Madhuri back again on the screen go for it. I am going with two and a half out of five for the Pink team.
